Montpelier/Barre Area
Montpelier and Barre are located in central Vermont, and the heart of Washington County. Montpelier is the capital of Vermont, and also a bustling little city, with shops, restaurants and plenty of outdoor recreation. Barre is comprised of the town, city and Graniteville, which is home to the Rock of Ages granite quarry.
Montpelier
Vermont's capital city, Montpelier is centrally located and is the largest urban historic district in the state. The iconic Vermont Statehouse is one of the oldest and best preserved historic buildings. The city is bustling with independently owned boutiques, shops and restaurants. The Wiooski River runs through the city and the bike path runs along that.
The city is nestled in the Green Mountains and outdoor recreation is near and there's plenty to be enjoyed. The popular Hubbard Park rises above the Statehouse and offers great views from a stone tower, diverse natural areas and walking trails, all close to the city center. North Branch River Park is comprised of 200 acres of mountain biking, cross country skiing, and walking trails. Stowe Mountain Resort and Sugarbush are less than an hour from Montpelier.
There's plenty of entertainment and arts to enjoy in Montpelier, including The Savoy Arts Cinema, a local theater and live music. Due to the abundance of both visual and performing arts throughout, it has been rated as one of the top 100 best small arts towns in the US.
Barre
Located just 10 minutes from Montpelier, and in the heart of Washington County, Barre is comprised of a town, city and Graniteville - a census-designated place (CDP). Home to one of the most famous granite quarries, one of the signature features of Barre is that many buildings incorporate granite in their structures. Many residential homes have granite foundations, and the downtown post office, among other city buildings, is made of granite. Barre is also the most populous city in Washington County.
The city offers shopping, dining and other amenities and services, while the town surrounds the city and features lovely views of the Green Mountains in many areas. Popular destinations in Barre include Rock of Ages, the Granite Museum, Barre Opera House and Studio Place Arts.
